Disaster Recovery Service

This service is designed to be your last-resort solution to data loss

As a matter of course you should be taking data backups from your family tree program
Those backups should be made onto an external drive so that if your hard drive fails you don’t lose your data and your backup
There should be more than one backup in case an external drive fails
And ideally one backup should be stored in another physical location

But sometimes the fates conspire against us. What happens if disaster strikes and you lose all your backups?

The answer is quite simple. You can email yourtreesadmin@berksfhs.org.uk
and ask for a copy of your tree. We will send you a GEDCOM file that you can import to your family tree program.

There are some caveats:

The data will only be as current as the last version you sent us – so keep those updates coming
We can’t guarantee an exact replica – because all family tree programs interpet GEDCOM files in subtly different ways

But the substance of your work will be recovered.
