The Story of John Phillips, an RAF volunteer (BAM)
Our speaker will recall the story of her Godmother’s son, a young man named John Phillips, who volunteered to join the RAF in 1941 when he was 19 years old.
After primary school he won a scholarship to Whitchurch Grammar School where he won the school’s heavyweight boxing championship cup in 1939; he was also a keen Rugby player, having attained captaincy of the first XV. On leaving school the family moved to Wellington, Shropshire and John entered the employment of R. Gwynn & Son, solicitors.
The talk will illustrate how using the information found in local archives, historical societies and from speaking to his contemporaries enabled the speaker to discover more the story of this young man.
